Most people in Woollahra, NSW are used to leaving the suburb for anything specialised. Orthodontics is the exception. We are on Edgecliff Road, between Ocean Street and the Queen Street shops, which changes the arithmetic of a two year treatment more than you would think.
A loose bracket on a Tuesday afternoon stops being a lost half day. Appointments sit either side of the school run instead of swallowing it. And when a teenager needs an unscheduled adjustment before a school photo, it happens.
The Municipality of Woollahra area sends us a fairly even split of children and adults. Parents usually arrive after a dentist mentioned crowding. Adults arrive later, and often quietly — a lower front tooth that has turned, or a retainer abandoned twenty years ago. Both are ordinary. We are also the closest orthodontist in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has to a walk-in specialist, which is worth knowing before you book a longer trip somewhere else.

What we treat
Braces, aligners and children’s orthodontics in Woollahra
Locally, the three things we are asked about most are metal braces, ceramic braces and clear aligners — usually in that order, and usually by adults who assumed they had missed their chance. What suits you depends on how far the teeth have to travel and whether the bite needs changing as well.
Clear aligners
Removable trays, swapped every week or two. They come out for meals and photographs, which is the whole appeal for most adults. Clear aligners →
Ceramic braces
Tooth coloured brackets, fixed in place. Same mechanics as metal, considerably harder to spot across a table. Ceramic braces →
Traditional braces
Steel brackets. The most capable option when the bite itself has to change, and often the quickest way there. Metal and ceramic braces →
Early treatment for children
Around seven is when a first look becomes useful. With Woollahra Public, Kambala and Scots nearby we do a lot of these, and most end in a diary note rather than braces. Children’s orthodontics →
Adult orthodontics
Teeth drift for decades. Plenty of our neighbours start in their forties, and nobody at the practice finds that unusual. Adult orthodontics →
Retainers
What holds the result. If your teeth moved after braces years ago, this is almost certainly the reason. Retainers →

Your first visit
What happens when you come in
Allow around an hour for the first visit. You are welcome to bring a partner or parent, and there is no obligation to start treatment on the day.
01
We talk it through
We ask what you have noticed and what you would change. It sounds soft. It is the part that decides everything after it.
02
We examine and take records
An examination, then scans or x-rays if we need to see below the gum. Bring recent x-rays from your dentist and we will use those.
03
We explain the options
What is possible, what each route costs you in time, and where the honest trade-offs sit. If metal would be faster than aligners, you will hear that.
04
You take it away
You go home with the information. Nothing is booked, and you live five minutes away, so there is no reason to decide in the chair.
Two practices, both easy to reach
Questions we are asked most often
Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?
No. Book an assessment directly. If your dentist has referred you, bring their letter and any recent x-rays — it can save you having them taken again.
Where exactly are you in Woollahra?
135 Edgecliff Road, between Ocean Street and the Queen Street shops. Edgecliff station is about ten minutes on foot. Our other practice is at Suite 2, 600 Military Road, Mosman.
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed a further three year full time specialist qualification in moving teeth and correcting bites. Your dentist looks after your general dental health. We only do the tooth movement. Most Woollahra patients keep both.
When should a child first be looked at?
Around age seven. Enough adult teeth are usually through by then to show how the jaws are growing. It rarely means starting treatment — most children just get reviewed now and then until the timing is right.
How long will treatment take?
Anything from a few months to about two years. Straightening crowded front teeth is quick. Changing how the teeth meet is not. You will get a real range at the assessment, not an encouraging one.
Can I have aligners instead of braces?
Often, yes. Aligners handle most crowding and spacing. They are less reliable when the bite has to change, and they only work if you actually wear them. If braces would serve you better we will say so.
Are metal braces still worth it?
Yes, and locally they are the most searched treatment we offer. They are the most versatile appliance made, usually the fastest for complex work, and the hardest to break. Ceramic gives you the same result less visibly.
What will it cost?
We go through it at the assessment, once we know what your treatment actually involves. Anything quoted before an examination is a guess. You will have it in writing before we start.
