Crooked Teeth Treatment in Sydney
Lifestyle Orthodontics provides specialist crooked teeth treatment in Sydney from our boutique clinics in Woollahra and Mosman. Led by Professor Ali Darendeliler, we straighten crowded and misaligned teeth with clear aligners, Invisalign and braces.
What Causes Crooked and Crowded Teeth?
Crooked teeth develop when there is not enough room in the jaw for every tooth to sit in line. Genetics is the largest factor: jaw size and tooth size are both inherited, so a smaller jaw paired with larger teeth leaves too little space and the teeth rotate or overlap to fit. Losing a baby tooth early lets neighbouring teeth drift into the gap, so the adult tooth erupts out of position. Prolonged thumb sucking pushes the front teeth forward, and habitual mouth breathing can narrow the upper arch over time. Teeth also keep moving throughout adult life, which is why many people notice their lower front teeth crowding in their thirties, even after braces as teenagers, because retainer wear stopped too early.
Mild, Moderate or Severe Crowding, and What Each Needs
Treatment is decided by how much space is missing. Your preference for a particular appliance comes second.
Mild crowding. A small amount of overlap or rotation. Often corrected with clear aligners alone, sometimes with a little polishing between the teeth to release room.
Moderate crowding. Noticeable overlapping across several teeth. Usually treated with aligners or braces, and may need arch expansion or interproximal reduction to create space.
Severe crowding. Teeth significantly out of line, blocked out or trapped. Generally needs fixed braces for the control they give over root position, and occasionally extractions.
We assess this at your first appointment with X-rays and a 3D digital scan, then walk you through what your case will involve.
Why Straightening Crooked Teeth Matters for Your Health
Straightening is about function as much as it is about appearance. Overlapping teeth trap plaque in places a toothbrush and floss cannot reach, which increases the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and persistent bad breath. Misalignment also spreads bite forces unevenly, which can accelerate enamel wear, chip edges and contribute to jaw discomfort. Correcting the alignment makes daily cleaning far easier and protects the teeth you already have.
What Causes Crowded Teeth?
Several factors can contribute to dental crowding, including:
Genetics
The size of your teeth and jaw is often inherited. If there is a mismatch between tooth size and available jaw space, crowding may develop.
Early Loss of Baby Teeth
Baby teeth act as placeholders for permanent teeth. When they are lost too early, neighbouring teeth can shift into the space, creating alignment problems later on.
Delayed Tooth Eruption
Some teeth may erupt later than expected or become trapped beneath the gums, increasing the likelihood of crowding.
Jaw Development
Variations in jaw growth can affect how much space is available for permanent teeth to emerge properly.
Crooked Teeth Treatment Options in Sydney
Clear aligners and Invisalign
Removable, near-invisible trays that move teeth in small stages. Our clear aligners and Invisalign treatment suit mild to moderate crowding well and handle many complex cases too, provided they are worn as prescribed.
Fixed braces
Braces remain the most precise option for difficult movements, particularly rotations, upright roots and bite correction. Modern brackets are smaller and more comfortable than the ones most adults remember.
Early treatment for children
Crowding is easier to manage while a child is still growing. Our children’s orthodontic care and kids braces can guide jaw development and create space before problems become entrenched. Orthodontics Australia recommends a first orthodontic assessment between the ages of eight and ten.
Veneers vs Orthodontics: Which Actually Fixes Crooked Teeth?
Veneers cover crooked teeth. Orthodontics corrects them. That distinction matters more than most patients are told.
A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth, and fitting one usually means removing healthy enamel, which never grows back. The tooth stays exactly where it was, so your bite stays exactly as it was; the teeth are still awkward to clean, and the veneers will need replacing at some point.
Orthodontic treatment moves the tooth and its root into the correct position. Nothing healthy is removed. The bite is corrected along with the appearance, and a retainer holds the result. As specialist orthodontists, this is the only part of dentistry we do, which is why we will always assess whether your teeth can be moved before anything is placed over them.
How We Create Space: Expansion, IPR and Extraction
Crowding is a space problem, so treatment starts by deciding where that space will come from.
Arch expansion widens a narrow upper jaw and is most effective in children and teenagers while the palate is still developing.
Interproximal reduction removes a fraction of a millimetre of enamel between the teeth. It is quick and painless, and for mild crowding it often frees up all the room we need.
Extraction is reserved for severe crowding where the other two cannot create enough space. It is not a routine step, and we explain the reasoning fully before recommending it.
How Much Does Crooked Teeth Treatment Cost in Sydney?
Cost depends on the complexity of your case, the appliance used, how long treatment runs and the retainers you need afterwards. Straightforward aligner cases sit at the lower end; complex braces cases involving expansion or extractions cost more because they take longer and need more appointments. Routine orthodontics is not covered by Medicare, but many private health funds with orthodontic extras contribute, and payment plans are available. We give you a written quote at your consultation, with no obligation to proceed.

FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to fix crooked teeth in Sydney?
Cost depends on complexity, appliance and treatment length rather than a fixed price. Straightforward aligner cases cost less than complex braces cases needing expansion or extractions. Private health extras often contribute, and payment plans are available. We provide a written quote at your consultation.
Which treatment is best for crooked teeth?
It depends on how much space is missing. Mild to moderate crowding usually suits clear aligners; severe crowding, marked rotations and bite problems generally need fixed braces for the control they give over root position. The bite is corrected along with the appearance, and a retainer holds the result. Problems generally need fixed braces for the control they give over root position. We will only recommend one once we have assessed your teeth properly.
Can veneers fix crooked teeth?
Veneers cover crooked teeth rather than correcting them. Fitting them usually removes healthy enamel permanently, the bite stays unchanged, and they need replacing over time. Orthodontic treatment moves the tooth and root into position and corrects the bite as well.
Will I need teeth removed to fix crowding?
Often not. We first consider arch expansion and interproximal reduction, which create space without removing teeth. Extraction is reserved for severe crowding where those options cannot free enough room, and we explain the reasoning fully before recommending it.
How long does crooked teeth treatment take?
Most cases run twelve to twenty-four months, with mild crowding often finishing sooner. The time depends on how far the teeth must move and, for aligners, how consistently they are worn. You receive a specific estimate at your consultation.
Can adults have crooked teeth treated?
Yes. Teeth can be moved at any age provided the gums and supporting bone are healthy. Many adult patients choose clear aligners for discretion. We provide adult orthodontic treatment at both our Woollahra and Mosman clinics.
