Up from the promenade

Two questions, and they come up almost every time

Adults from Bondi Beach, NSW want to know how noticeable treatment will be. Parents want to know whether their child is at the right stage to be looked at. Neither needs a long appointment to answer properly.

On visibility, ceramic brackets have quietly changed adult orthodontics — tooth coloured, fixed, and unremarkable at conversational distance. Aligners go further still, coming out for meals, swimming and photographs, which counts for more here than in most suburbs. The catch with trays is that they only work while they are in your mouth.

On timing, seven is the useful age for a first look, because enough adult teeth are through to show how the jaws are developing. It very rarely means starting then. Bondi Beach sits in the Waverley Council area and the run up Bondi Road takes about eight minutes, so neither conversation has to wait for a free day. What we treat

Ceramic braces, aligners and children’s orthodontics

Ceramic braces are the most searched treatment from this postcode, with aligners close behind. Which suits you depends on what has to move and how much of the outcome you want resting on your own discipline.

Clear aligners

Removable trays. Out for meals, the surf and photographs — the appeal here is fairly obvious. Clear aligners →

Ceramic braces

Tooth coloured brackets, fixed. The most requested treatment locally, and for good reason. Ceramic braces →

Traditional braces

Steel brackets. Still the most capable option when the bite has to change. Traditional braces →

Early treatment for children

A first look around seven. Enough adult teeth are through to show how things are developing without waiting for the full set. Children’s orthodontics →

Adult orthodontics

Routine work, and discretion is nearly always the opening question. Adult orthodontics →

Retainers

What stops the result unwinding. Most adult relapse cases start with a retainer that stopped being worn. Retainers →

Yes. They move teeth identically — the difference is a tooth coloured bracket instead of steel. Metal is marginally tougher and stays preferable for some complex corrections, and we will tell you if yours is one.

They can, because they come out for swimming, meals and photographs. The catch is they only work while worn, so they suit people who reliably put them back in. If the bite needs real correction, fixed braces may be the better answer regardless.

Around age seven, when enough adult teeth are through to show how the jaws are developing. Most first appointments end with a review date.
