Five minutes uphill
Children first, adults a close second
Two groups come to us from Double Bay, NSW in roughly equal numbers, and children’s orthodontics is the one this suburb searches for hardest. Usually the trigger is a dentist mentioning crowding at a routine check up, and the parent arrives wanting to know whether something should be done now.
Almost always the answer is not yet. Seven is the age at which a first look becomes informative, because enough adult teeth are through to show how the jaws are developing. Most children leave with a review date. Starting too early can add to the total time in treatment rather than reduce it, so patience is often the clinical recommendation rather than a fob-off.
The adult half of the caseload is quieter and mostly about discretion. Aligners and ceramic brackets between them cover the majority of it. Double Bay sits in the Municipality of Woollahra area, five minutes up Ocean Street. More on our approach as an orthodontist in Sydney.

What we treat
Children’s orthodontics, aligners and braces
For a child, the first appointment is a look rather than a plan. For an adult it is usually a choice between two discreet routes. Both start in the same chair.
Clear aligners
Removable trays covering most crowding and spacing. The usual adult choice where nothing fixed is wanted. Clear aligners →
Ceramic braces
Fixed, tooth coloured brackets, for cases needing more control than trays can offer. Ceramic braces →
Traditional braces
Steel brackets. For a teenager whose bite is still settling, frequently the sensible call. Traditional braces →
Early treatment for children
What Double Bay asks about most. A first look around seven, usually ending in a review date. Children’s orthodontics →
Adult orthodontics
The other half of the caseload — crowding that arrived slowly, or a school result that has drifted. Adult orthodontics →
Retainers
What holds the result. Most adults whose teeth moved simply stopped wearing theirs. Retainers →

Your first visit
What happens when you come in
Allow around an hour for the first visit. You are welcome to bring a partner or parent, and there is no obligation to start treatment on the day.
01
We talk it through
We ask what brought you in. With children we ask them too, since they are the ones wearing the appliance.
02
We examine and take records
An examination, then scans or x-rays where needed. Recent x-rays from your dentist can be used.
03
We explain the options
What is realistic now and whether waiting a year would make the eventual treatment shorter.
04
You take it away
You take it home. Nothing is booked, and the village is five minutes away.
Two practices, both easy to reach
Questions we are asked most often
Do I need a referral?
No. Book directly. Bring recent x-rays if you have been referred.
How far is the practice from Double Bay?
Five minutes by car up Ocean Street, or about fifteen minutes on foot from the village. We are at 135 Edgecliff Road, Woollahra 2025, with Edgecliff station close by.
When should a child first be seen?
Around age seven. Enough adult teeth are through by then to show how the jaws are developing and whether growth needs guiding. It does not mean treatment begins then.
Does an early appointment mean early braces?
Usually not. Most first assessments end with a review date. Starting too early can lengthen the overall course, so we aim to begin where the work is shortest and most effective.
Can adults have treatment without it showing?
In most cases, yes. Aligners are removable and close to invisible; ceramic braces use tooth coloured brackets. Where the bite needs real correction fixed braces are still required, and ceramic keeps those discreet.
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
Three further years of full time specialist training in tooth movement and bite correction.
How often would we come in?
Short reviews, usually several weeks apart. At five minutes most families absorb them into an ordinary week.
What will it cost?
We go through it at the assessment once the treatment is known.
